Social Housing

The Evergreens Foundation provides subsidized rental housing to low-income families and individuals unable to afford private sector accommodations. The Evergreens Foundation administers these programs on behalf of Alberta Housing and Urban Affairs.

Community Housing Program
The Community Housing Program is designed to offer adequate housing to Canadian families in financial need. The Evergreens Foundation presently manages 7 townhouse family units in Edson and 6 duplexes, plus 1 house in Hinton. Tenants' cost are 30% of income, which includes rent, heat, water and sewer; telephone and electricity services are the tenants’ responsibility.

Rent Supplement Program
The Rent Supplement Program assists households in need to obtain affordable and suitable rental accommodation. The Alberta government pays private landlords and housing cooperatives a rent supplement to subsidize the difference between a negotiated market rent and 30% of household income. The Residential Tenancy Agreement (lease) is between the tenant and the landlord.

The Direct to Tenant Rent Supplement Program

The Direct to Tenant Rent Supplement Program follows the same directive as the Regular Rent Supplement Program with the exception of who is paid. In this program, the rental payment goes directly to the tenant; the landlord is under no contract with The Evergreens Foundation. The onus is on the tenant to find suitable housing and pay their rent each month.
